Chapter 21
EMILIANA
"Obviously, you'll help me with the rent," I added quickly. I knew Amanda well enough to know that she would be offended if I didn't offer, although honestly, I had no problem with her living in my house for free. Her mere presence was payment enough.
But I wanted to stay alive, so I wouldn't tempt fate. Amanda shifted in her seat, the wine glass in her hand wavered slightly, and she seemed uncomfortable and a bit surprised by the offer.
I had acted on impulse, and now I hoped I wouldn't regret it. I wanted to hear Amanda's response, but the sound of the timer announcing that the food was ready distracted me. I returned to the kitchen and put on gloves to take the pasta out of the oven. It was one of my favorite childhood recipes, and also the first thing I learned to cook. I hoped she would enjoy it as much as I did, as it held beautiful memories of my childhood. I placed the dish on the table and started to set up some plates, glasses, and napkins.
