Chapter 127. Middle Class

Leah’s POV

The car was silent and I stared at Jake, trying to mentally process what he had just said. I was so taken aback that I really did not know what to say. So I just sat there staring at him. 

He scoffed and then peeled his eyes away from me, a sad smile on his face as he opened one of the compartments in the car and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. He then took a lighter too and then lighted one of them. 

When he was done, he offered one to me. “Want one? You’d probably need it.” The sad smile never left his lips. 

I was so confused, I wanted to understand what was happening but at the same time, I was scared to find out. “You think you’re poor?” I asked him, keeping eye contact on him. 

He shrugged and then placed the cigarette in his mouth, at least part of it. He took a hit and then breathed out the smoke in the car. I did not like the smell but I also did not want to complain or seem like I was judging hi
