It was already dark when we arrived at my grandparents’ house. I checked the time on my phone and saw that it was already 7:45 PM. The journey had taken almost an hour and a half. It wasn’t because of traffic; Bulacan was just far from La Zerendad.
“Grandma… Grandpa?” I called as I knocked on their door.
When I heard footsteps approaching, I looked around. Not much had changed since my last visit two years ago.
“What’s this?” Grandma asked before opening the door.
As soon as she opened it, I hugged her tightly. Like I mentioned earlier, I hadn’t seen Grandma and Grandpa for two years. I thought they would come during Mama’s wake and funeral, but they didn’t because my uncle’s van broke down and they couldn’t make it to Manila.
“Leslie… my grandchild,” Grandma said, her voice trembling. I could tell she was about to cry, so my own tears started to well up.
