“Fuck!”

The words came out of his mouth as he twisted his face. He was flustered because the shower handle had broken and fallen on him.

He shook his head, feeling disappointed in himself for staying in a hotel like this. He had chosen it last night because he had no other place to stay. He knew fully well this had never happened in his former jobs. It was either 24/7 being beside the clients, even when they were sleeping, or he had gotten a guest room if they didn’t feel comfortable.

He had been surprised when he saw her, prettier and more grown than she was the last time. But he never thought this was one way they would meet, protecting her from invincible dangers that didn’t exist.

He was even more surprised when he saw the little girl, walking up to her saying the word “Mommy.” She was living a happier life than him, and he felt pathetic. Things would have been different if they were still together 4 years ago.
