Jason’s POV
I turned back to her, stuffing my hands into my pockets.
"Layla, I think I need to head out for a bit. There’s some work at the warehouse that needs my attention."
Her eyes faced me, and a soft smile tugged at her lips.
"You’ve been here for so long, Jason. It’s okay, go handle your work. I’ll be fine here."
"You sure?" I asked, taking a step closer to her. "I don’t want you thinking I’m just leaving you here."
She chuckled softly, her voice light. "Jason, you’ve done more than enough. I’ve got Maddie here, and the nurses are just a call away. Go on, I’ll still be here when you’re done."
Her reassurance eased the guilt that had been gnawing at me. I nodded, letting out a breath.
"Alright. But if you need anything…anything at all…you call me, okay?"
"I will," she promised, her smile growing.
