How was I supposed to tell him that his life was in danger? That a woman he’d never met wanted to hurt him because of who his mother was?
I swallowed hard, trying to find the right words. “I just… I just want the best for you, Jason. This new school… it’s bigger, and… and nicer. They have a huge playground and a lot of fun activities. You’ll make new friends, and you’ll be really happy there.”
He looked at me, his eyes searching my face as if trying to figure out if I was lying. He was so young, so innocent, but so damn perceptive. Just like his mother.
