Chapter 54. Hunted
Distorted sunlight danced on the tops of the waves, and the water felt warm against Germaine's skin. It would have been peaceful to her except for the fact that she knew she was going to die.
But then, just as her lungs felt like they would bust, a dark figure came crashing through the waves, blocking out the sunlight and headed straight for her. She would have screamed if she had been above sea level, or not on the briskly of losing consciousness.
From the film of water above her, hands reached down and tugged her by her dress and she crashed against a warm, hard chest.
Everything became blurry thereafter.
Next thing she knew, she was bombarded by the sounds of people yelling. It felt like she was still underwater, and could hardly breathe. She came to for a few minutes because she suddenly felt a rush of hot air all around her, pressing into her and then she passed out.
Germaine did not know how long she was out, but she woke up to a dark
