Chapter 13. Sparks & Scents

Lex’s POV

“Still no trace of her?” I asked as Zack joined our table.

“No,” he replied with a heavy sigh.

After delivering her message, the witch had turned and vanished into the night. Zack had tried to track her, but she masked her scent, leaving no trail to follow.

“At least you have a mate,” I said, taking a bite of dessert.

“Yeah,” he answered, rolling his eyes. “One who bolts at the first meeting. That’s practically rejection, you know.”

“She said she’d be back,” I reminded him. “Don’t lose hope yet.”

“I know, but Lupa is howling in my head, scratching for release,” Zack groaned. “He wants to find her now. It’s driving me crazy!”

“I understand,” I replied. “Lotus was the same for me, and I was barely twelve at the time…”

I paused, setting my spoon down. That period of my life was bitter and hard. Lotus lost control when we couldn’t find Lilly. I eventually lost all command over him. He forced me to shift and wreak hav
