“Damien…” I murmured as I held him tightly.
“No, I was such a fool. I was too scared to hurt you, and I resented Lucas for what happened to my mother and brother. His father got my mother killed—I knew it—and he vowed to wipe the Black family clean. When my dad heard about the proposal, he thought it was a way to hand the Black legacy over to Lucas. After all, I couldn’t bear children, and there was no hope of my even being a father,” he whispered as he placed his hand on my stomach.
“My father told me to let you go. He told me that this was a chance, a once-in-a-lifetime chance that would change everything. He was ready to leave everything to your child when he was born, and I was ready to go away—far away—to live the rest of my life in isolation,” he said, and I gasped as I looked at him.
He was ready to leave. I understood he was depressed and that it had hurt
