Chapter 55. Everything About Our Mother
EVERLY
I gazed into Evan’s eyes, then slid my hand into my backpack and brought out the only thing I had that could convince him. It was a pendant that had been around my neck since birth. “This was our mother’s,” I whispered. “She had one made for both of us. Do you recognize it?”
Evan looked at the pendant for a while, then slid his hand into his shirt pocket and removed an identical pendant.
My heart leaped into my throat.
“You have it too,” I breathed.
Evan looked at me, his hands trembling. “I’ve had this since I was a baby. I thought it was from my Mum.”
Tears gathered in my eyes. “But it was from her. From our mother.”
We lapsed into silence for more than a minute while realization settled over him. And then, finally, Evan’s gaze softened.
“I don’t know what to say,” he murmured.
“You don’t have to say anything,” I whispered. “Come here.”
I rose to my feet and spread my arms, waiting for him to give me an embrace.
