Chapter 8
With my map and notes in hand, I slung my backpack over my shoulders and headed back into the forest. I was determined to find a way to break the curse and shake off the creatures pursuing me. As I ventured deeper into the wilderness, I remained vigilant, constantly scanning for any signs of danger.
I knew I was exposed—alone, without real protection—but I had a purpose to fulfill. However, exhaustion soon overtook me. I found a stream of clean water and knelt down to take a few sips.
As I leaned over to drink, a faint rustling in the vegetation caught my attention. My movements froze, and my heart raced with fear, preparing me for a desperate escape. The water trickled between my fingers as I held still, listening.
Suddenly, I heard words—a familiar voice—and turned quickly to see a hand reaching out toward me.
“Stella,” he said in an unexpectedly calm tone. “Don’t be scared. It’s me, Randall. I just want to talk. Alone.”
