Chapter 127. The Benefit of the Doubt

Melvin tossed around in his bed after Elaine had left. There was nothing to do but sleep. He would have a busy day at work tomorrow. Andrew would make sure of that.

But he couldn’t sleep. All he could think about was Elaine. And her rejection. It reminded him too much of Gwen and her refusal to marry him. She was always pushing the bar. Get this and I’ll marry you. Do this and I’ll marry you. They would never get there.

He didn’t want to believe that Elaine and his lover were similar but all of Harris jabs had got to him. In a fair world, he wouldn’t need to be engaged to Elaine to get his inheritance. In a fair world, there would be no one between him and Gwen. In a fair world, he would have just as much chance as Andrew did at running the family business.

He tossed again and buried himself under the duvet. But it was no good. He was charged up and he needed release. Elaine was not an option. Her refusal had helped him to see things clearly. Even though he was no
