His bruised hands were resting on his knees, his fingers loosely intertwined. His clothes were rumpled, stained with dirt and something darker…something that made Anna’s stomach twist.
His face was paler than she remembered, his cheekbones more prominent, his lips dry and cracked.
But it was his eyes that sent a chill through her.
Dark. Unreadable. Almost…haunted.
Anna stared at him, her chest heaving up and down as she was trying to figure out what was going on.
A dozen emotions crashed into her all at once: relief, anger, confusion, fear.
