Chapter 29. Telling the Truth
Anna’s mother turned to her, a hint of concern in her eyes. “Of course, sweetheart. What is it?”
Anna took a deep breath, gathering her courage. She was really about to do this. “Do I have a half-brother?” Nervousness laced her tone but she kept her eyes locked with her mom.
The room fell silent. Her mother’s expression shifted from confusion to shock and then to a guarded look. Her father’s face paled, and Kevin paused his game, glancing between his parents and Anna.
Her mother sighed, placing her cup of whatever she was drinking down on the table.
“Anna, where did you hear that?” Fear danced in her eyes.
Anna hesitated but decided to be truthful. “I… I met someone who claimed to be my half-brother. He told me to ask you about it.” She could not believe that she was coming clean about it all, well, not everything, but about this.
Her mother’s hands trembled slightly as she clasped them together. She swallowed hard and looked at her son and husban
