The moment I drove through the gates of my house, I knew something was wrong. The guards stole glances and avoided eye contact with me. I parked my car and walked inside, only to see the guards at the front door busy talking.
“What’s going on? Why aren’t you attentive today?” I barked at them, my mood worse now.
Startled, they turned to look at me as if they had seen a ghost! Were they so busy with themselves that they hadn’t seen my car enter? “Oh, good afternoon, Mr. Nikolaou!” gasped one.
“G-good afternoon, sir. We were attentive all morning,” said the other.
“Did anyone visit since I left last night?” I watched them minutely, noticing their hesitation.
“No, sir. No one arrived, but Mrs. Nikolaou left with her pet dog and luggage this morning.”
