Chapter 7. Duties
It was pitch black when the two Hunters wheeled the body to the church a few blocks from the city’s center. Relian brings his fist up to pound on the door, and it takes nearly ten minutes for a response. The priest was already in his nightgown, his eyes heavy with interrupted sleep. “What on earth?!” and his flabbergasted tone changes to one with slight disdain as he asks, “What do you want?”
Relian gives a suppressed grumble.
“We have a body in need of a burial Father,” Kai explains.
The priest looks over to the cart and waves a hand as he replies, “Ah, bring it to the back; I’ll have the diggers cremate it.”
“You’re not going to bury him?” Kai inquires.
“What’s there to bury?” the priest asks. “All I see is a desecrated body, unfit for the proper rites. Now is that all?”
Kai gave a nod and the door was promptly closed. After the corpse is set down at the back of the church, Relian gives Kai a slap on the back and says, “You did good.”
