Chapter 4
Jolene bit her lips as she stood, glaring at the car, her eyes squinting in the sun. She scowled and paced in anger, her hands folded over her breasts. Rose dabbed at a sweat trailing its way down her face and hissed, her heart filled with pity for her husband as he raised his hands up and down in defeat for the umpteenth time.
She glanced at Jolene, sweating in the sun, and gestured to her. “Go wait in the car for us, honey. Your dad will fix the car soon.”
Jolene scoffed. “Do we really have to go, mom? We haven’t moved far from home. We can just take a taxi, and dad can come back later with a mechanic to fix the car.”
Rose pouted at a loss of what to say to pacify Jolene. She could see she was in a mood again. “It’s Thanksgiving season, baby, and Aunt Pamela is expecting us. It was hard to visit when we were far away, but now that we live just a few miles away, we have no excuse. Moreover, you haven’t seen her in a while, and she is eager to see you.”
