Chapter 56. Jacob's Past

The evening air grew colder as Maddie walked, the shadows lengthening along the suburban streets. Her footsteps echoed, the sound oddly amplified in the silence. She could not shake the feeling of being watched, a prickling sensation running up her spine. 

Maddie quickened her pace, her eyes darting from side to side, searching for any signs of movement. 

Her mind raced, replaying the conversation with Nate. She could not deny the intensity of his feelings, and that had been all she wanted all her life, for someone to truly love her. So why did it feel this way? Why was she so confused? 

As she turned a corner, getting closer to Jacob’s house, she saw it. It was the beast-like wolf, it watched her from the shadows. Maddie swallowed, her heart thundering in her chest as fear gripped her. 

She continued down the sidewalk until she reached Jacob’s house. Then she quickly ran to the porch and rang the doorbell.
