Chapter 61. Face-to-Face

The beast took a few more tentative steps forward, its nose sniffling the air. Maddie could feel the tension in Nate’s grip, both of them poised to react if necessary. She tried to calm her racing heart, focusing on the plan they had discussed. 

Suddenly, the beast’s ears perked up, and it turned its head sharply to the left, seemingly distracted by something deeper in the forest. Maddie could barely make out the sound of distant footsteps. 

The beast let out a low growl and just as it was about to slip away into the shadows, Maddie’s phone made a buzz. “Sh*t,” She muttered as her heart dropped, rushing to take the phone out of her pocket so she could turn off the ringer. 

What the hell? How could she forget to turn off her ringer?!

The beast stared straight into their direction even though they were masked by the bushes. The sound had not been too loud but because the forest was quiet, it had echoed.
