Chapter 16
“No,” Jay said casually. “Just some guy sent by the company he works for to deliver a ring and flowers to the design girl.”
Cain paused with a low sigh as something sharp passed through his eyes; gone almost as soon as it came. He could barely hide the irritation in his voice.
“Again?” Cain asked.
Jay shrugged. “Yeah. Was a diamond ring. Can’t say if it’s fake or not, but she didn’t seem dazed by it.”
Cain flicked his lighter open subconsciously; his way of managing the thoughts going through his head. He closed it after watching the thin flame briefly. Opened it again, then closed it. The metal click was soft and repetitive. Annoyance sat under his skin; unwelcome.
“What are the odds that she’s a politician’s child hiding out for some reason,” he said finally.
Jay laughed. “Very low, Cain. She doesn’t look like it.” He swung a leg over his bike after saying. “We better start going. We are going to be late if we don’t.”
