Chapter 39
Cain sat on the narrow bench in the holding cell, elbows resting on his knees, his hands loosely clasped in front of him as he stared ahead. The place smelled like metal and old concrete. It wasn’t the first time he was in it so he had already run through what needed to happen next.
One call, that was all he needed, and Vic or any of the others would be here to get him out. He just had to wait.
Footsteps from a pair of clanking heels echoed down the corridor. He didn’t look up at first but when the footsteps slowed, he did. The pair of heels clicked once, then again, like whoever it was had taken a step back.
Cain lifted his gaze. Lifting his eyes slowly, they followed the woman’s heels, up her trousered legs. It was Ryan.
She stood just a few steps past his cell, her head tilted slightly as she looked at him like she was confirming something she already suspected. For a brief second, neither of them spoke, then she turned her attention away from him and look
