Chapter 11

For lots of reasons, I couldn’t shake the dark feeling I had. Knots formed in my stomach as I got dressed for the night—our night. Goosebumps ran across my skin, and numerous thoughts waded through my head. I was now scared of the unknown, but not scared enough not to go outside.
I had told Ashley to lie low at her parents’ just for the night, even when she protested and strongly stood against it.
“I’m so scared that something might happen to you,” I had said, watching her brows crease into a frown.
The moment she opened her lips to speak, I had added quickly, “I know you want to say that you’re not scared of him, but you did see what happened to Declan. Also, he can’t threaten me if he doesn’t have you hostage,” I had joked, trying to make light of it, though my laugh cracked midway.
Rolling her eyes, she had muttered, “Just this once.”
