Staring at the tray of food in front of me, I could smell the aroma of freshly baked potatoes and pastry, but I couldn’t think of eating. The golden crusts glistened under the faint light, and the scent of butter and herbs teased my empty stomach, but my throat was dry. All I wanted was to leave this hellhole.
My phone buzzed once more beneath the pillow.
Ashley: Tell me where you are. I’ll come get you myself since the cops don’t want to hear me out.
It was bold of her to assume that a heavily guarded threshold like this would let her in to take me out.
Me: I can’t put your life in danger. Don’t worry too much, I’ll be fine. Just stay low and don’t call me, okay? I’ll text you every now and then.
