Chapter 15. Cut Short
He opened the paper bag and box, and in it was a tennis diamond-studded necklace. She was not a fan of jewelry, she knew that now, but she could not help but admire the craftsmanship.
Yes, it is for me, she thought with glee. Her heart was full. If only she remembered who she was, and if she did, she would still stay with him, she promised herself. Unless she was married, she thought sadly.
“Are you sad? Did you not like my surprise?” He did not know whether to get her a necklace or a ring. He decided a ring was too soon. It might be seen as him proposing to her and pressuring her without meaning to. So he bought a dainty necklace instead.
“No, just thought of something,” she said, trying to sound cheerful.
“What is it? You know you can always tell me.” As he told her those things, he could not help but notice all of the people at the store were looking at them. The women with adoring eyes and the men with haughtiness and somehow disgust.
