Chapter 25
When Vince brought up the idea of us getting married, I was terrified. I knew we had been dating for over four years now, but getting married was a totally different thing. It meant that we were going to be starting our lives together as a real family, and somehow, I was scared of that reality coming to pass.
“I am afraid of being your wife,” I informed Vince.
Vince looked at me with worried eyes that were unsure of what I was saying. He didn’t expect me to react in the way that I did. He didn’t expect me to openly reject the idea in the way that I did.
“Laura, why are you afraid?” he asked, his voice laced with concern. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”
I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. “It’s not about us, Vince. It’s about what marriage represents. It’s a lifetime commitment, and I’m scared of the unknown. What if we change? What if we’re not happy in the long run?”
