Chapter 27

Winter’s POV

“How is he still alive?” I muttered under my breath as I spotted Lordan walking into the ceremony in his regalia, grabbing Eliza’s hand tightly.

“Eliza, tell me why that man is still standing.”

Eliza whispered back, “My lady, I know it’s a smothering sight, but you have to save yourself for now. There are many eyes here.”

It felt like I was crumbling as if I had lost yet another battle. All the nights I had spent dreaming with Lucas seemed to have gone to waste. Not only was Lordan not dead, but I was on the verge of losing Lucas to someone else. Even though I understood that Lucas loved me regardless, it still hurt that I had to watch him get mated to my worst enemy.

Two defeats in a row.

“No, this shouldn’t be, Eliza. He shouldn’t be—”

Eliza squeezed my hand again.

“I guess we just have to accept that our plan didn’t work. He probably did get the right dosage. Let’s just get through this today, and we can think of
