Patrick Banks POV

“Married?”

My chest tightened as if someone had just knocked the air out of me.

Valerie smiled. “Happily.”

I felt my heart crushing into a million tiny pieces,

Honestly? I had this glimpse of hope that she hadn’t moved on to someone else. I always felt that we would eventually find our way back to each other, no matter how many years it would take.

But I guess I was just being delusional.

Valerie was fucking married.

And she was proud of it.

I wanted her to tell me it was just a silly lie.

If she didn’t want to go out with me, she should just say it instead of saying something so heartbreaking like she’s married.

“Who are you married to?” I asked, bracing myself for the answer.

“I don’t think I’m willing to share such information with you.”

Her coldness stung more than I had expected.

“Are you lying to me?” I asked, holding on to a tiny bit of hope that she was just playing with me.
