Chapter 176. Retreating from the Chaos

Alexander sat in his study, the dim light illuminating on the desk where he had spread open his note. The room was his hiding place, a place where he could retreat from the chaos of his life, from the constant tension with Maxwell and the silence that had settled between him and Isabella. He leaned back on the chair, closed his eyes and tried to push away the memories of recent the events that worried him.

The loud ring of his phone broke into the silence. Alexander opened his eyes and glanced at the caller ID. Ryder was the one calling. His father-in-law seldom called, and when he did, it was never for casual conversation. Alexander knew this call was about Isabella.

“Hello, Ryder,” Alexander greeted, trying to cover the worry in his voice.

“Alexander,” Ryder’s deep voice spoke through the speaker. “How are you?”
