“Leila, wait,” I called back. The running figure half away toward the back garden showed no sign of having heard or heeding. Once or twice she threw a look over her shoulder and then shook her head to walk away.

I was tired of this game, tired of this run for her attention within my household. The way things were going, it felt like since Jocelyn had put herself back into my life, I didn’t share one second alone with Leila. Jocelyn would be here, every time, on time as always, with some pretext or need that took me elsewhere.

Not this time.

I caught Leila up at the sliding door and stepped in front of her before she disappeared again. “Leila,” I repeated softer now, my hand reaching for her arm. “We need to talk.”
