“Iris!” I barked her name the moment I caught sight of her trying to avoid me.
She halted in her tracks, like a startled deer caught in a snare, then slowly turned to face me.
“The… Theodore,” she stuttered, trying to compose herself, but it was too late for grace.
“You wanted to hit Adeline? For real?”
“I… I… It was self-defense,” Iris said, fumbling with her words.
“Iris!” I yelled at her, I couldn’t hold back anymore. “I brought you back in because I felt pity for you. I couldn’t let your innocent daughter suffer for a crime you committed—and you are Adeline’s sister.”
“I forgave you, even after you left. Or have you forgotten?” I snapped. “Have you forgotten?!” I yelled again.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake!” I snapped, “I have always listened to you—even though Adeline has been insecure because you made me believe she was insecure!”
