Hawa’s POV
I went to set the table. I didn’t even know how many days she would stay. It was she who asked for her son to be given to me. Uncle Saliou told me about it. I didn’t know where this whole story was going to lead us. I just hoped it wouldn’t create a problem for him and jeopardize my projects. I cared so much about them.
I had already learned from Aunt Oumou how to set the table. I wasn’t used to doing things the “white” way. I knew African customs better. And this house looked like a “white” house. I took the lids and put them on plates as Aunt Oumou had taught me.
I took the placemats and set the places for everyone. The placemats matched the tablecloth. I placed the plates in the center of the placemats. I folded the napkins and placed them to the left of the placemats. I placed the main course fork on the napkin, the knife to the right of the plate, and the tea
