I couldn’t help but laugh at her passionate response. “Yes, he was a real jerk,” I agreed, a smile on my face. “But I’m not sure that means that I’m ready to take a leap of faith with your father. It’s just all so complicated.”

“I get that,” Ava said, her expression sympathetic. “But maybe it’s worth taking things slowly and seeing how you feel. You don’t have to jump into anything, but maybe you could give him a chance to show you the person he is now?”

I thought about her words, knowing that she was probably right but still feeling hesitant. “I know you’re right,” I said slowly. “But it’s hard to put my trust in someone after everything that’s happened.”
