Chapter 26. Betrayal

I am in the car with Chris as we drive home. It is obvious that he is still upset about what happened at the restaurant with Victoria, and I can’t blame him.

She had no right to bring up his passed wife.

“I’m sorry that you had to see me like that back there,” he speaks for the first time since we entered the car. I love that he is apologizing even though he does not really have to.

It shows maturity and humility, which I am a sucker for.

“I was just so angry, and I couldn’t control my emotions,” he confesses, and I give him a reassuring smile.

“I am not going to see you as any different, Chris. Victoria knew what she was doing, she triggered you and knew that you would react. Don’t be sorry for being a human,” I say to him in response, and he smiles.

I like it when he smiles.

“Thank you,” he says softly.

We spend the rest of the ride in comfortable silence, and soon we reach the mansion. Chris drives us into the comp
