Chapter 27
Serena POV
“What’s the matter, Serena? Are you okay?” Mom asked after I finally settled into the chair next to her bed.
“I’m fine, Mom,” I replied with a shrug. “I’d have gotten flowers for you, but.. I forgot.”
“It’s okay.” She smiled weakly. “What would I want more than for my daughter to be here next to my sick bed?”
I immediately felt guilty about her words. I know I hadn’t been coming over as often as I had to, and to hear her put it that way sent a wave of guilt crashing over my body.
“I’m sorry, Mom..” I muttered. “I’ve just been... a little bit busy.”
“Busy?” She scoffed. “With what? Work? When last I heard, you were still without a job, Serena!”
Ouch..! That really stung but I wasn’t to be blamed for that; I was just a miserable girl with an unfortunate history of bad luck.
“I’m working towards that,” I muttered, trying not to get annoyed at her words. I knew she didn’t mean any offense.
