Kara looked at Elieth, and Anya wanted to scream at them to just tell her what the heck was going on.
“You hear that the council of elders keeps trying to nudge your mother, the Queen, into finding you a husband?” Elizabeth asked.
She nodded, her heart pained at the idea that her mother had to deal with that. She might not be forced to marry before being allowed a seat in the council, but she still didn’t want others to take advantage of her.
“They had issues with you acquiring a seat in the council just like that, without a husband,” she said.
Elizabeth snorted. “That’s one way of putting it. Well, they’re back. Or, more precisely, Anna is back.” She swallowed hard. “She’s gotten the rest of the elders on her side.”
Something cold crawled up her spine, and she froze. “What are they saying now?”
Kara met her gaze. “She’s inviting Sawyer to the palace so that you get to see each other, and if everything goes as planned, you are getting married next
