Chapter 29

The elder held my necklace between his fingers.

“I just feel the cold of the silver,” he said, turning the moon pendant between his fingers. “I don’t feel any magic here.”

“I don’t feel anything either. Not on this plane.”

The elder appeared to frown, but quickly changed his expression as something passed through his ancient mind. I didn’t have to think much to know that he must be consulting his mental books on magic and witchcraft. As he released the pendant and the silver hit my chest, I felt the same vibration of pure magic taking over my body. But it was so fast that I could barely register it.

“What was your father?”

I stared at him.

“An idiot who abandoned my mother as soon as I was born.”

“An idiot who left an amulet that would allow his companion to find her in the future.”

I paused for a moment.

“Do you think my father could have been someone important?”

“The right question is why exactly do you think he wouldn’t
