Chapter 39

Chantal’s POV

Mateo didn’t say anything and was simply staring at me. I knew he had something to say to me, but he wasn’t ready for what he wanted to say, so I waited for him to pick up the pace and shifted my position to his side, holding his hand. This was the best I could come up with. Whatever was going through his head, I was sure it was not good news, and I had a strong sense while we were eating breakfast that the words he picked up on the phone were not good news.

“Here it is,” he mumbled, and I was completely focused on him.

“My front desk informed me that someone had entered my office and inquired as to where I was,” he said.

I tried to maintain my composure and avoid letting my curiosity get the better of me because if that happened, I’d exaggerate and make everything almost untrue. I wouldn’t be able to understand what he would say if I let it consume me, so I remained calm.
