“Okay, will no one do the introductions?” The ashy-blonde haired woman beside Melvin turned to Elaine. “Like, who are you and what are you doing at our family’s table?”

“That’s a bit rude,” Melvin’s father said.

Elaine did not care. While she enjoyed the food that his grandmother had prepared and chipped in a little bit here and there when questions were asked, she watched Melvin play with the food on his plate. His jaw was set. He was more upset than she had ever seen him. And she couldn’t help but feel like this was largely her fault.
