Chapter 139. Chopped Carrots
The knife came down again with a large chop, slicing the carrot top away from the rest of the carrot. Elaine diced the carrot body into small bits, julienne style as she had learnt from Andrew’s grandmother.
Tears pooled in her eyes. It had nothing to do with the three large onion bulbs she had chopped before. She wiped it off with the back of her gloved hand. There was no point in ruining someone’s evening by having them eat naturally salted carrots.
Andrew had done many things to piss her off but one of the unforgivable things was not letting her say goodbye to his family. She had come to love them as her own. Even more than her family because they wouldn’t have let her chop three large batches worth of vegetables all by herself, after she had spent the whole afternoon on her feet waiting tables. They wouldn’t have made her beg for her food or work overtime for it. And they certainly didn’t treat her as bad as her family did.
