Chapter 25. Melvin’s Date

Uneasy was the way to describe how Melvin felt. When he’d agreed to attend Charleston’s wife’s birthday party, he hadn’t expected Gwen’s presence. Neither Gwen. Nor Bennett.

She stood among other men, talking, while her fool of a husband watched. Everything warred within him. He was the one to stare at her like she was the diamonds of the universe.

“You haven’t touched your food.” His escort placed her arm on his.

He’d planned to take her back to his hotel room and try to get her pregnant and when he was sure, he would take her to his family to present her as his fiancée but that plan was looking more and more unlikely as he watched Bennett smile at Gwen.

“I’m not hungry.” He pushed the escort’s arm away.

He left their table and headed for the buffet table, where Gwen stood.

“Good evening.” He stepped into the ring of people around her.

“Oh, Mr. Swernbach, I didn’t know you would be here,” she smiled slightly. He knew that smile was a lie.
