Anna’s stomach twisted at his words. She rushed forward, crouching beside him, her hands begging to touch him but she held herself back. “Zac, what do you mean? What happened?”

He let out a bitter laugh, running a shaky hand through his already disheveled hair. “Your mother,” he said, looking at her for the first time, his eyes dark and unreadable. “She turned me in.”

Anna felt a burn in her chest and she sighed. “I know…she had given me an ultimatum. She said she was going to turn you in if I didn’t follow her and my dad back home. Back to our hometown. And I was done, Zac. In fact, I am done. I wasn’t going to allow her to dictate my life anymore.”

“And I didn’t know. I thought she was bluffing. When she made the call, that was when I knew she wasn’t and it was too late. I’m so sorry,” she continued, her voice breaking.
