Chapter 148. Caught?

Anna’s fingers trembled as she stared at the phone screen, Zac’s name glowing against the dim light of the living room.

She shouldn’t call.

Victor would find out. He was too smart. But again, was she going to just let Zac go like that? Without even saying goodbye?

Her heart wasn’t even listening to reason. It was screaming at her, clawing at her ribs, begging her to just press the button.

Her heart thumped in her chest as the line began to ring. Once. Twice. Three times.

Then—“Hello?”

Anna’s breath caught and she swallowed hard, her throat all of sudden getting dry. 

It was Zac. His voice was deeper than she remembered, rougher. Like he hadn’t slept in days.

She didn’t say anything. She couldn’t. Her throat was too tight, her pulse too frantic.

“Hello?” he said again, this time sharper. “Who is this?”
