Azeeva’s heart ached to hear this. Such a small child was caught up in the mission of greedy creatures. On the other hand, Zee applauded the boy’s intelligence and courage.
Put friends as enemies and enemies as friends, and never let your guard down against anyone, not even yourself. That was more or less the message from Zee’s father when he was sent to the Asylum at eleven. Ridiculously, Azeeva thinks her father put her in the Asylum because he couldn’t be a single father anymore. Azeeva began to feel odd as a teenager—why shouldn’t she be placed in an orphanage? But that thought was dismissed by other perspectives as her brain grew.
Maybe the Lunatic Asylum is more challenging because my strength exceeds that of the other little creatures in the orphanage, Zee thought at fifteen.
Ah, Dad doesn’t want his image to be bad! He doesn’t want to be labeled as abandoning his biological daughter! Zee thought at the age of seventeen.
