Once we know the potion is effective, Rainer and I go to the ballroom. He has to inform King Myenas of Lydia’s unexpected death while I get Lex and use the commotion to disappear unnoticed. Lex is in conversation with King Myenas and King Matthias. He’s managed to look like he belongs with them, laughing at their jokes and appearing interested in their conversation.

Rainer bows deeply when he approaches them before moving closer to King Myenas to whisper in his ear. The king immediately stands up and causes cups of wine to fall over. He doesn’t say a word to the other royals and hurries off to leave the ballroom, Rainer following him. The courtiers are distracted and whispering amongst themselves about the old king’s behavior.

King Matthias is still conversing with Lex. Knowing I have to keep up the ruse of being a mistress, I touch Lex’s shoulder and murmur into his ear, “Hey.”

Lex is a good actor. He doesn’t stiffen up and visibly force
