Chapter 38. The Price of Silence

Maddie sat at the table, staring at her food for almost five minutes straight, stuck in her head. 

Had she been the one who was responsible for Elder Roy being in the hospital? Because how did she manage to get blood on her shirt? 

Someone cleared their throat and she looked up, pulled away from her trance. It was Nate.

Her heart started beating in her chest and she glanced around, not wanting anyone to see them talking.

But did it even matter? Elder Roy was in the hospital and could not reach her. But he could still hear about this. 

He slid into the empty seat and clasped his hands together, staring at her. She felt so seen under his gaze, it was as if he knew every secret that she was hiding in her closet.

“Are you okay?” He began, keeping his eyes of concern on her. 

Maddie found it comical for a few seconds when the alpha asked this. This was one of his favorite and famous questions. “Why do you ask that?”
