Parley gave a satisfied nod before walking away again to greet another guest. At that moment, something inside her snapped quietly. Enough pretending and obeying. Enough letting everyone decide her life for her.
Liana looked across the ballroom and saw Steve laughing with a group of men already acting like her future had been settled.
Her breathing became uneven. She set her untouched drink down immediately and turned away before anyone noticed the panic building in her face. Nobody stopped her at first.
Why would they? She was Parley’s obedient daughter. She walked calmly through the hallway, then faster once she reached the private wing upstairs.
