Chapter 24

“Don’t worry. I’m not staying here for the night,” he said. It was as though he had read my mind, pouring some water into a glass cup just as the doorbell rang. He was beginning to show some manners toward me.

“Have some water.” He handed me the glass and went to the door.

“Thank you,” I said. He came back in with a food tray and set it carefully by my side. It felt awkward watching the man who once kidnapped me serve me food calmly and reassure me.

“Have something to eat,” he said, pulling the tray toward me.

“I’m not really hun—” I tried to protest.

My stomach growled, loud and untimely. That could only mean one thing—I hadn’t eaten anything solid all day. I couldn’t blame my body for reacting the way it did.

“Maybe I’ll have a bite,” I said with a faint chuckle, trying to hide my embarrassment as I looked away, avoiding his gaze completely.
