The sun was not as harsh as when we first arrived, but its rays toasted the back of my neck. As I walked, I kicked stones and dragged my feet. Maybe I did act like a child sometimes, but it wasn’t my fault. My father had protected me from most of my responsibilities while I was growing up and shielded me from criticism. As an only child, nothing was beyond my reach.
I had not really given the future a thought. Somehow, I hoped my father would live forever, be the Alpha for another hundred years, and I would be free to waste away in my youth. However, the years went by so fast, and I was twenty-one in the blink of an eye. I was married, for Goddess’s sake, to the pack’s angel, and I suddenly had so many people looking up to me to make good decisions—decisions that would determine their livelihood.
