Mason’s POV

The air was chilling as I pushed open the door to my apartment, the sun casting a golden ray over the slumbering street. My eyes strained on the building next to mine, recalling the incident of the previous day.

It wasn’t part of my job description to become so involved with people, especially people I knew nothing about. But there was something about this one. The way her eyes sparkled with both shame and hope when I had come to her rescue. Or when she’d recoil when I’d told my name.

I’d grown used to, people treating me differently because of my last name. But the look on her was far from just that, it was as if the name had burned her in the past, but I couldn’t push to find out what it was because I didn’t want her to feel like I was prying into her life just because I helped her.

I dismissed those thoughts and opened the door to Mr. Sinclair’s cafe, the former owner of the complex I had just purchased.
