My legs almost gave out as I wobbled back and tried to cover my mouth to stifle any sound, but the shock was too deep to contain. The door was suddenly pushed open. Ian was the first person my eyes met with, a surprised expression on his face. After a moment, Hunter followed. “What—” He trailed off, his eyes widening. The expressions on both of their faces were unexplainable.

“What did I just hear? You mentioned my mom’s name,” I blurted out as bile began rising in my throat.

“Listen, Rose—” Hunter started, advancing toward me, causing me to shift back.

I couldn’t believe my ears as I looked between the two of them, their words echoing in my head. “What do you mean my mom is involved in your problems?” I demanded, staring straight into Hunter’s eyes. Was that why he said my mom would do the talking the other day?

“Calm down, Rose. We will explain everything to you, but you need to calm down. It’s not what you’re thinking,”
